Arkansas
Baptist
College
is a four-year,
private, coed, liberal arts college affiliated with the Arkansas Baptist
Consolidated Convention. Founded as the Minister’s Institute, the name
changed to the Baptist Institute before becoming
Arkansas
Baptist
College
in 1885. As a
church-affiliated institution, Arkansas Baptist provides a liberal arts
program in a Christian-centered environment. The college programs are
designed to develop the academic, social, and spiritual potential of
each of its students. Arkansas Baptist forms part of a cooperative
center with Philander Smith and
Shorter

, which share resources, and programs.

BACKGROUND
Philander
Smith College is a small, privately supported, historically black,
four-year liberal arts, career-oriented college, related to the Board of
Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church and The
United Negro College Fund. Established
to educate former slaves,
Philander
Smith
College
is
Arkansas
's oldest private historically black college (HBCU). Officially opened
in 1877,
Philander
Smith
College
is the result of one of the early attempts to make education available
to freedmen (former African-American slaves) west of the
Mississippi River
. The forerunner of the College was Walden Seminary, named in honor of
Dr. J. M. Walden, one of the originators and the first Corresponding
Secretary of the Freedmen's Aid Society.

BACKGROUND
The
University
of
Arkansas
at
Pine Bluff
is a state supported land grant institution. It was created in 1873 by
an act of the Legislature as a branch of the
Arkansas
Industrial
University
(now the
University
of
Arkansas
). The University is committed to providing quality educational programs
in the agricultural sciences and arts and sciences.
UAPB awards Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Master’s
degrees.
HEALTH
RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Since
1968 UAPB has an active nursing department that awards a B.S. in Nursing
Degree and is accredited by the National League of Nursing.
Currently, the Nursing Department has no grants but is interested
in seeking funding for a
Nursing
Center
for Community Service with a concentration on providing research and
services to Medicare beneficiaries.
The Department’s other research interest areas are community
outreach, rural health, oncology and training community outreach
workers. The Department of Family and Consumer Services is currently
working as a partner in the USDA funded
Lower Mississippi
health and nutrition project.
OTHER

UAPB
offers academic programs in Family and Consumer Services, research and
development in business and management, education, liberal and fine
arts, science and technology, computer science, pre-engineering, music,
chemistry and biology.
ADDITIONAL
INFORMATION
UAPB,
in conjunction with the National Institute of Health through the
University’s Department of Biology and Chemistry, offers an honors
program for selected junior and senior students interested in biomedical
science. Additionally, UAPB
through the Department of Biology and in cooperation with other
departments offers a Pre-professional Health Careers Program to
coordinate and facilitate the efforts of students to pursue health and
allied health careers.
OTHER

In
1986, the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees and the Arkansas
Coordination Board of Higher Education approved the
UAPB
Research
Center
. The Center is multi-purpose for research and sponsored programs. It
was developed and organized to increase research and scholarly activity
by faculty and students, thereby transforming UAPB into more of a
problem-solving institution in keeping with its land grant and historic
mission.
UAPB
has continuing education programs, a radio and television station, and a
media center a minority recruiting program, a substance abuse program
and a USDA extension service.
