BACKGROUND

Howard University is a comprehensive, research-oriented, historically Black private university providing an educational experience of exceptional quality to students of high academic potential with particular emphasis upon the provision of educational opportunities to promising Black students.  The Howard University College of Medicine first opened as a medical department in 1868, just three years after the close of the Civil War. At that time, newly freed black men and women were migrating to the nation's capital in large numbers. The founders of the College recognized that the overwhelming health care needs of this population and of other black people throughout the country would be met best by training highly competent, compassionate physicians who would deliver care in communities which had a shortage of health personnel. About 110 new students are enrolled each year.

Health Related Academic Activities

The College of Dentistry at Howard University was established in 1881. It is the fifth oldest dental school in the United States .  The Howard University Division of Nursing has as its purpose the development of students at the bachelor and master's level who can effectively and efficiently address the diverse and complex health care needs of society. The Division of Nursing was established in 1969 with a program of studies leading to the bachelor's degree in nursing. In 1980, the Master of Science Degree in Nursing was initiated and recently, a Post-Master's Certificate Family Nurse Practitioner Program was added. The Division of Nursing has also expanded in the realm of international nursing. There has been significant involvement in consultation, instruction and curriculum development in some of the developing African countries. The College of Allied Health offers undergraduate programs in Clinical Laboratory Science, Health Management, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, and Radiation Therapy. The graduate programs include a Masters in Physical Therapy, and Masters and Ph.D. programs in Nutritional Sciences.

The College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences includes the School of Pharmacy , the Division of Nursing and the Division of Allied Health Sciences. These academic units provide experiences in the sciences and the practice of pharmacy, nursing and allied health sciences to an ethnically diverse population of students with high scholarship and leadership potential, and to prepare its graduates to assume leadership roles in addressing critical areas of health and socioeconomic needs of people of color locally, nationally and internationally. The College enrolls over 1,400 students, who are served by 90 full-time and 27 part-time faculty.  The School of Pharmacy offers the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The Division of Nursing offers the Baccalaureate and Master's degrees in Nursing, and a Post-Master's Certificate in Nursing (Family Nurse Practitioner). The Division of Allied Health Sciences offers the Baccalaureate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Nutritional Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Radiation Therapy and Health Management (candidate for accreditation); a Master's degree in Physical Therapy; a Certificate in Primary Care Physician Assistant; and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Nutritional Sciences in conjunction with Howard University 's Graduate School .

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

In 1995 Money magazine named Howard University one of the "three best" educational values among U.S. colleges. In the Black Enterprise rankings of the "top 50 Colleges for African Americans," Howard sits in 5th position. In years past, Howard University was often referred to as the "Black Harvard." This eminent, multi- faceted historically Black college was our undisputed best, and we could point to legacies like former Supreme Count Justice Thurgood Marshall and a virtual army of graduates (doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and entertainers). Howard University offers a vast and diverse menu of research opportunities as evidenced by twenty-three (23) Ph.D. degree and thirty-two (32) Master's degree programs in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. A faculty of more than three hundred (300) eminent scholars and researchers guide more than one thousand (1,000) graduate students through the investigations required to satisfy the stringent requirements for these advanced degrees.  In addition, other research opportunities are present for both graduate and undergraduate students in search of new knowledge or as practicums in service areas.

On Howard's campus there are many Centers, that represent Howard’s areas of research interest, such as AIDS, cancer, medical education, drug abuse research, banking and insurance education, pre-professional education, sickle cell disease, child development, Woman’s Wellness and social work research.  These Centers are used to stimulate interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research among faculty and students as well as to cooperate with intra-institutional colleagues. Examples of funding agencies assisting Howard are Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Center For Disease Control. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), United States Air Force (USAF), Department of Agriculture (USDA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical and NASA.

The Program is geared to those persons who work in the senior service network and who desire opportunities for professional development and personal enrichment; to those persons who are second or third careerists who are desirous of developing a new knowledge base without committing to a full four-year program of study; or to those persons who are simply interested in understanding their own or a loved one's aging process.
