BACKGROUND

Bethune-Cookman College is a four-year, private, coed residential college situated on a 60-acre campus two miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the metropolitan area of Daytona Beach . Affiliated with the United Methodist Church , Bethune-Cookman provides education in a setting deeply rooted in tradition and guided by Christian and intellectual principles.  Founded in 1904 by noted educator and civil rights leader Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. Bethune-Cookman's mission is to serve the educational, cultural and social needs of its students and the school prides itself as having an environment in which students can comfortably prepare to take their place as tomorrow's leaders.

Bethune-Cookman College provides adults in distant communities access to a college education in seven extension sites in Florida , plus a branch campus in Spuds. Open on weekends, the main campus gives adult learners the opportunity to complete studies toward their Bachelor Degree.  Additionally, the college offers Continuing Education, Radio Station, Television Station, and a Health Careers Opportunities Program.

BACKGROUND

Edward Waters College is, distinctively, Florida 's oldest independent institution of higher learning as well as the state's first institution established for the education of African Americans.  Edward Waters College bases its principals on the mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.   In 1892 the school's name was changed to Edward Waters College in honor of the third bishop of the AME Church . Waters (1780-1847).  Courses were first offered at the elementary, high school, college, and seminary levels.  From the beginning, the College was faced with both abject poverty and widespread illiteracy among its constituents resulting from prewar conditions of servitude and the old legally enforced non-schooling of black persons.

 

OTHER ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Edward Waters College awards the Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science degrees, along with Pre-professional and Pre-college programs.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Under the guidance of President William B. Stewart (1951-72), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) first accredited Edward Waters College in 1955 as a junior college. Then, in 1958, course offerings were again expanded to include senior college work and by 1960 the college had restored its four-year curriculum and again granted the bachelor's degree.  Accreditation as a four-year college was first approved by SACS (Dec, 1979) and later reaffirmed (Dec, 1984). The college, then grown to an average full-time enrollment of 650 students, became the 43rd member of the United Negro College Fund (Jan.1, 1985).  Edward Waters College gives top priority to excellence in academic study as a religious endeavor. This excellence results from such emphases as low student-teacher ratio, small class sizes, broad based course offerings and dynamic professors.

BACKGROUND

Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, founded on October 3, 1887, as the State Normal College for Colored Students, began classes with fifteen students and two instructors. Its destiny - to become an institution of higher learning, striving toward even greater heights of academic excellence. Today, Florida A&M University is one of nine institutions in Florida 's State University System, and excellence - "excellence with caring" - remains its goal.

Florida A&M University is a four-year, public, co-educational and fully accredited institution of higher learning. The main campus is spread over 419 acres located on the highest of seven hills in Tallahassee , the capital of Florida . The total assets of the University are valued over $190 million dollars. The campus is comprised of 131 buildings and has a current operating budget of over $210,000,000. Florida A&M University student enrollment population consists primarily of undergraduates (students enrolled at the lower division). As of fall 1997, Florida A&M University offered 108 undergraduate degrees in 64 undergraduate programs and 60 graduate degrees in 32 graduate programs (includes 1 professional and 7 doctoral degrees) within its 12 Schools and Colleges. The doctor of philosophy is offered in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Education and FAMU/FSU College of Engineering.

BACKGROUND

The College traces its origins back to 1879, to the Florida Baptist Institute in Live Oak, Florida , and to the Florida Baptist Academy, founded in Jacksonville in 1892.  Decades later, after a relocation to St. Augustine, a merger of the two schools, several name changes, and expansion to a four-year academic program, the institution’s charter was amended, and the name Florida Memorial College was adopted in 1963.  The College relocated to Miami, Florida, its permanent home, in 1968 and is the only historically Black college in the southern region of the state.

The General College Division offers some of the first-level courses required in the Core Curriculum. The Division is the point of entry for all first year students and for transfer students who have not declared a major and/or are required to enroll in two or more pre-college level preparatory courses. Students who are required to take only one pre-college level course are co-advised in the General College Division and the degree-granting Division while that course requirement is being fulfilled.
