BACKGROUND

Chicago State University , a public, comprehensive, urban institution of higher learning located on the south side of Chicago , strives for excellence in teaching, research, creative expression, and community service. The mission of the university is to: 1) provide access to higher education for residents of the region, the state and beyond, with an emphasis on meeting the educational needs of promising graduates from outstanding secondary schools as well as educating students where academic and personal growth potential and promise may have been inhibited by lack of economic, social, or educational opportunity and 2) produce graduates who are responsible, discerning and informed global citizens with a commitment to lifelong learning and service.

 

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The College of Health Sciences at Chicago State University consists of the departments of nursing, occupational therapy and health information administration. The departments of Nursing, Health Information Administration and occupational therapy offer a four-year program that leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. The College of Health also offers a Minor in Health Sciences. The new minor is particularly attractive to Pre-Medicine/Pre-Dental, Psychology and Non-Traditional Program majors who wish to pursue a career in the health field.  Enrollment in Health Sciences is 549.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Calumet Environmental Resource Center (CERC) is a unique resource library, meeting place and referral network where local community residents, government officials, nonprofit environmental organizations, and others can learn about and respond to pressing environmental issues in the Calumet Region. CERC was established in 1991 through a joint effort of the Neighborhood Assistance Center at Chicago State University, the Center for Neighborhood Technology, and the Chicago Legal Clinic and is maintained by the Neighborhood Assistance Center .

 

Chicago State University is a member of The Chicago Consortium of Colleges and Universities, which in partnership with the Chicago Police Department is currently developing an online degree completion bachelor's of arts degree program for law enforcement professionals.  In addition, the Consortium will also offer the bachelor's of science degree in Criminal Justice strongly supported by distance learning, accelerated or compressed semesters and transfer credit acceptance.  Chicago State University , a public state university, will be the degree granting institution for both degree programs.  This university envisions that by the year 2010 all faculty and students will be actively engaged in research, scholarship and creative expression.  Chicago State University radio CSURADIO.com has hooked up with the web site nibblebox.com.
