BACKGROUND

Dillard University is a private, historically black, faith based liberal arts institution. Dillard's history dates back to 1869. On June 12, the American Missionary Association of the Congregational Church founded Straight University , and, on July 8, the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church established Union Normal School . Straight University and Union Normal School were subsequently renamed Straight College .

On June In 1930, New Orleans University and Straight College merged to form Dillard University . The University was named in honor of James Hardy Dillard, whose distinguished service in the education of African Americans in the South forms an important chapter in the history of American education.

 

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The Division of Nursing was established in 1942 and became the fifth academic division of Dillard University . The Division of Nursing has the distinction of being the first National League for Nursing accredited program in the state of Louisiana . Courses are offered for Health Professions and Related Sciences.

 

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The Division of Social Sciences offers courses of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in African World Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, Sociology and Criminal Justice, Sociology and Social Welfare, and

Urban Studies and Public Policy: Students are trained in both traditional and contemporary theoretical principals and research methods within their chosen fields. Other academic programs include business. Degrees awarded include: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science in nursing

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Dillard has invested more than $40 million in infrastructure improvements since the beginning of President Michael L. Lomax's term in 1997. Dillard is also engaged in an on going re-imagining of the entire academic enterprise.

The university seeks to provide the most knowledgeable faculty teaching in programs designed not only to meet but also shape the contours and needs of the 21st century. Dillard has recently created a special Pre-Law Curriculum for prospective Law school attendees. The Office of Global Studies & Dillard University's International Center for Economic Freedom (DUICEF) provides overall leadership to the University's international education program objectives. 

 

OTHER CAPABILITIES

Dillard University has recently developed a joint collaboration with the Division of Business and Community Labor United (CLU) to create LA RICE (Louisiana Research Institute for Community Empowerment), a research think tank devoted to increasing awareness and making suggestions for the resolution of community problems.

BACKGROUND

Southern University A & M College is a publicly supported land-grant institution that awards associate, baccalaureate, masters and doctorate degrees.  Southern opened with 12 students, 5 faculty and a $10,000 appropriation.  With the passage of the 1890 Morrill Act, the University was reorganized to receive land-grant funds.  From its humble beginnings, Southern University has grown to become the only Historically Black Land Grant university system in the United States .  With in the system there are five campuses: Southern University at Baton Rouge opened in 1880, Southern University at New Orleans opened in 1956, Southern University at Shreveport opened in 1964, the Southern University Law Center opened in 1985 and the most recent campus Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center opened in 2000.  The institutions of the Southern University System offer 152 degree programs ranging from certificates to the doctorate. Each campus has its own chancellor and institutional leadership.  The campus at Shreveport awards associate degrees and technical certificates only but serves as a resource for statewide projects involving the Southern University System.

 

HEALTH RELATED DEGREE PROGRAMS

The School of Nursing located at the Southern University A & M College campus offers bachelor, masters, nurse practitioner and doctorate programs. The School of Nursing is the second HBCU to offer a doctorate program in Nursing.  Additionally Southern University offers a Master’s degree in Health Care Administration and a bachelor degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.  A requirement for graduation for all SUBR students is that they must complete 4 credit hour of health education.  Courses in health are offered in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction Division of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.  Additionally, the Department of Behavioral Studies and Education Leadership offers a master’s program for health counselors.  The Center for Health Sciences and the Center for Social Research are actively conducting health related research.  The Department of Social Work offers courses in HIV/AID Education.  The Center for Wellness, opened in 1992, conducts community based health services research and serves as a health education and learning center for students, faculty, staff and the community.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Through cooperative agreements with Louisiana State University , Pennington Nutrition Research Center , Bowie State University , and other HBCUs SUBR has developed many health related programs.  There are numerous dual degree programs offered at SUBR, which are in conjunction with LSU, Jackson State University and Xavier University . Southern University Center for Wellness was one of the eight HBCUs that participated in the CMS sponsored Horizon Flu Immunization Project. Southern University A & M College seeks to insure that all graduates are broadly educated and prepared for life-long learning to meet the changing demands of society.

BACKGROUND

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) is a senior state institution of higher learning. It was founded as a branch unit of Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College , Baton Rouge , by Act 28 of the Extraordinary Session of the Louisiana Legislature of September 4, 1956, and began its initial year of operation on a seventeen-acre site located on the perimeter of Pontchatrain Park .  With a freshman class of 158 students, one building, and a faculty of fifteen, the first graduation took place in May 1963 at which time baccalaureate degrees were awarded to fifteen persons. 

 

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

SUNO is the only campus in the Southern University System that offers courses of study for substance abuse counselors leading to certification as a substance abuse professional.  Additionally courses are taught pertaining to health, mental health, gerontology, children, youth and family.

 

OTHER ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The University offers approximately 400 different courses and services to approximately 4,000 students each semester.  A range of basic degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business, education, and the technologies, and graduate degree programs in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Computer Information Systems, and Urban Education are among the offerings.  SUNO awards associate, bachelors and masters degrees.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The University provides a sound education tailored to meet the special needs of students coming to an open admissions institution and prepares students for full participation in a complex and changing society.  The University offers a liberal education directed toward the achievement of higher literacy and a broad intellectual development, which in turn serves as a foundation for training in one of the professions. 

 

SUNO offers both a Baccalaureate Social Work Program and a Master of Social Work Program.  SUNO's Title III Satellite Telecommunications Network Interface Program is a comprehensive educational telecommunications service and production center. The services provided by this federally funded facility impact, it is estimated, over 80,000 people per year via daily cable, microwave, video-playback, and/or satellite networking. The Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS) at Southern University at New Orleans was founded in 1989. The mission of the Center is to serve as a cultural, research, and teaching resource that will identify, collect, develop, preserve, and disseminate new and expanded information and materials about the African heritage, the African American experience, and African and African American contributions to world civilization.

BACKGROUND

In 1967, Southern University at Shreveport made its humble beginnings on what is now called the Martin Luther King, Jr. Campus.  From the beginning, the priority has been to aid people from diverse backgrounds to improve the quality of their lives and become contributing participants in this community's cultural and economic development.

Southern University at also offer nationally recognized programs in Radiologic Technology and Dental Hygiene.  Additionally, the university’s Division of Allied Heath Sciences offers (8) associate degrees and three (3) certificate programs.

Divisional programs are offered through four (4) departments, namely, Department of Aerospace Technology, Department of Biology and Chemistry, Department of Engineering Technology, and Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Southern University has two additional locations to serve the educational needs of the community: the Downtown Metro Center providing state-of-the-art allied health programs, and the Aerospace Technology Center that houses the FAA-approved Aerospace Technology and Maintenance programs.  SUSLA is the only campus in the southern University System that offers a degree in Applied Science in Aviation Maintenance Technology. In 2001 the University changed the name to Southern University at Shreveport , Louisiana (SUSLA).

  • SUSLA provides training to students and coordinates with others in the support and enhancement of workplace literacy instruction.   Also, this campus provides progressive curriculums and training for skilled positions in local businesses and industries. This Southern University is the only campus in the Southern University System to offer a degree in FAA-approved Aerospace Technology and Maintenance programs.

The University's major academic units are a College of Arts and Sciences (undergraduate enrollment - 3,027); a College of Pharmacy (enrollment- 473), which awards the Doctor of Pharmacy degree; and a Graduate School (enrollment- 343), which awards the M.A.T., the M.A. in education, and the M.Th. in Theology. The Drexel Center (enrollment - 69) is a community outreach and adult education program.

 

BACKGROUND

As the nation's only institution of higher learning that is historically Black and Catholic, Xavier's purpose from its founding has been to help create a more just and humane society. Reaffirming its Black heritage and its Catholic tradition, Xavier offers opportunities in education and leadership development to the descendants of those historically denied the liberation of learning. According to the U.S. Department of Education, Xavier continues to rank first nationally in the number of African American students earning undergraduate degrees in biology, physics, and the physical sciences overall. Xavier is one of only six schools chosen to participate in the National Science Foundation’s Model Institutions for Excellence in Science, Engineering and Mathematics programs. 

 

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

 Xavier has been especially successful in educating health professionals. The College of Pharmacy is first in the nation in the number of Doctor of Pharmacy degrees awarded to African Americans; since 1927 it has graduated nearly 25% of the 6,500 Black pharmacists practicing in the United States . It is one of only two pharmacy schools in Louisiana . In pre-medical education, Xavier is first in the nation in placing African American students into medical schools, where it has been ranked for the past nine years. The 77% acceptance rate of Xavier graduates by medical schools is almost twice the national average, and 92% of those who enter medical schools complete their degree programs. Xavier University is among the nation’s 76 accredited colleges of Pharmacy.  It offers a master’s degree program in Nurse anesthesiology in conjunction with the Medical Center of Louisiana.  At the undergraduate level, it offers pre-medical and pre-dental programs.

 

OTHER ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Undergraduate students who major in the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, Education, Languages or Communications as well as those in the sciences are required to complete fifty-seven hours of liberal arts core curriculum courses in English, literature, fine arts, foreign languages, history, African-American Studies, mathematics, natural sciences, philosophy, religion, and social sciences in addition to courses for their major fields. Xavier offers preparation in 42 major areas on the undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree levels. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education, the National Association of Schools of Music, the American Chemical Society, the Louisiana Department of Education, and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Xavier is the only private school in Louisiana accredited by NCATE.

The University offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in business, natural or health science, psychology, education, mass communication, political science and computer science and the graduate school of Arts and Science.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Xavier is first in the nation in enrolling and graduating African Americans in pharmacy. In fact, the University has educated nearly 25% of the 6,000+ African American pharmacists practicing in the United States . Xavier ranks first in the nation in placing African American students into medical schools, outpacing such prestigious national competitors as Harvard, Yale , Michigan , and North Carolina , and such prominent HBCU's as Morehouse, Spelman and Howard.  Xavier is a member of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.  It offers three intercollegiate sports.  Students cross register for courses at several area universities.  Xavier has several centers such as the institute of bioenvironmental toxicology, the writing center the speech and hearing center, the center for advanced teaching, the deep south center for environmental justice, the economic development center and a center in cooperation with Tulane University .

 

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Xavier Career Services offers Alternating Co-op, involving alternating semesters of full-time on campus study with semesters of full-time employment and Parallel Co-op involving part-time work while attending formal classes.

 

OTHER CAPABILITIES
