BACKGROUND

On July 1, 1988, Bowie State College officially became Bowie State University , a change reflecting significant growth in the Institution's programs, enrollment, and the service to the area. On that same day, the University also became one of 11 constituent institutions of the newly formed University System of Maryland. In fall 1993, Bowie State University took a distinctive step into the international market by becoming the first historically black university in the nation to expand its satellite and continuing education programs overseas. In partnership with the University of Maryland University College, Bowie State now offers graduate programs in management information systems and administrative management to military personnel stationed in Germany .

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
The Department of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Masters of Science in Nursing.

OTHER ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Bowie State University now serves a student population that has grown more than 50 percent in recent years. Students are technologically sophisticated, culturally diverse, and internationally sensitive. To provide the resources necessary to graduate students who will become leaders in a competitive and technologically sophisticated market, the University has expanded its academic resource base with a number of innovative initiatives. Discipline-based technology, research, and a commitment to community service have been integrated throughout the academic curriculum. Additionally, the academic schools of Education and Professional Studies and Arts and Sciences reflect the University's growth as a regional comprehensive institution.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

In 1995, Bowie State University won an 11-year, $27 million award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/National Science Foundation to become one of only six national Model Institutions for Excellence in science, engineering, and mathematics. This award, which significantly strengthens the Institution's academic infrastructure, builds on an already excellent computer science program that ranks fifth in the nation in graduating African American students earning a master's degree. The University has also undergone significant internal evaluation to streamline academic and administrative processes to ready itself for a new and increasingly competitive marketplace. In recognition of that ongoing process, Bowie State was selected to be one of 21 national participants in the American Council on Education/Kellogg Project on Leadership and Institutional Transformation.  In recent years, Bowie State has emerged as a regional comprehensive university and a jewel in the crown of the University System of Maryland.

BACKGROUND

In 1900, at Douglass High School on Pennsylvania Avenue , the Baltimore City School Board initiated a one-year training course for the preparation of African American elementary school teachers. In 1902 the training program was expanded to a two-year Normal Department within the high school, and seven years later it was separated from the high school and given its own principal. In 1926 this facility for teacher training was named Fanny Jackson Coppin Normal School in honor of an outstanding African American woman who was a pioneer in teacher education. By 1930 the curriculum was lengthened to four years, authority was given for the granting of the Bachelor of Science degree, and the name of the Normal School was changed to Coppin Teachers College.  A twelve-year struggle for survival culminated in 1950 when Coppin became part of the higher education system of Maryland under the State Department of Education and was renamed Coppin State Teachers College .
