Network Research, Education and Outreach Activities

The areas of research, education, and outreach activities among members of The Network focus on reduction of health disparities in areas identified in the health promotion and disease prevention objectives outlined in Healthy People 2010 (NCHS, 2003) including breast and prostate cancer, diabetes, immunizations, hypertension, nutrition, and injuries due to violence.  Other areas of focus include elder caregiving, spinal cord injuries, prenatal services, and health education.  Research interests of members include managed care, chronic childhood illnesses, women’s health, poverty alleviation, barriers to teaching healthy behaviors to minority populations, mammography and prostate screening, cancer prevention, HIV/AIDS prevention, infant mortality and teen pregnancy prevention, disparities in quality of care, long term care uses, and cardiovascular disease.  Health policy implications are identified based on research findings.

Network investigators have reached more than 10,000 individuals in the African American community since 1996.  Our researchers have increased knowledge and dispelled myths about health issues among individuals often identified as “hard to reach”.  We have raised awareness about the impact of health disparities on the African American community and implemented strategies for behavior change.  HBCU researchers are the missing ingredient in the battle to overcome health disparities.

We have the knowledge, expertise, and commitment to help reduce health disparities.  Above all, we have access to the African American community that is the result of longstanding linkages and partnerships.  We have established enduring partnerships with community-based and faith-based organizations.  These relationships have placed us in the position of being accepted as authentic voices, i.e. individuals who can be trusted and therefore, allowed access to the community.
