BACKGROUND

Cheyney is a state-supported comprehensive that was founded as a part of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Cheyney was originally founded as the Institution for Colored Youth and is the oldest HBCU in America .  Today, Cheyney University students represent a variety of races, cultures, and nationalities

           

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The School of Allied Health prepares students for nursing, medicine, dentistry and medical education.

 

OTHER ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Degrees granted at Cheyney are the bachelor's in more than 30 disciplines and master's in education.  In addition the graduate programs provide certification for post-baccalaureate teacher educational programs in 12 areas, including elementary and secondary principalship.

BACKGROUND

Lincoln University is a state comprehensive institution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that was chartered in April 1854 as Ashmun Institute. This was the first institution found anywhere in the world to provide a higher education in the arts and sciences for male youth of African decent. The story of Lincoln University goes back to the early years of the 19th century and to the ancestors of its founder, John Miller Dickey, and his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson. The Institute was renamed Lincoln University in 1866 after President Abraham Lincoln.  Since its inception, Lincoln has attracted an interracial and international enrollment from the surrounding community, region, and around the world. The University admitted women students in 1952, and was formally associated with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1972 as a state-related, coeducational university.

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Through the Lincoln University 's Multidisciplinary Center On Aging there are opportunities for those seeking continuing education in the area of aging. Continuing education courses are available for: Seniors and Caregivers, Social Service Professionals, and Health Care Professionals.   Lincoln offers a Health Science major which is designed to prepare students for graduate study in the allied health disciplines. 

 

OTHER ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Lincoln offers academic programs in undergraduate study in the arts, sciences as well as graduate programs in human services, reading, education, mathematics, and administration.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

During the first one hundred years of its existence, Lincoln graduated more than 10 percent of the Black attorneys in the United States . Its alumni are administrators over 35 colleges and universities and scores of prominent churches. At least 10 of its alumni have served as United States ambassadors or mission chiefs. Many are federal, state and municipal judges, and several have served as mayors or city managers. The Lincoln University Multidisciplinary Center On Aging provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate education, research, technology training for seniors, Technology training for health and human service professionals, training and continuing education for professionals working in Gerontology and Geriatrics to increase the number of African-American gerontologists/geriatricians in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.  The Department of Biology has conducted notable research and takes the lead role in conducting collaborative research with both majority institutions and other HBCUs.

 

OTHER CAPABILITIES

The Therapeutic Recreation program at Lincoln University prepares students for entry-level therapeutic recreation positions upon graduation. Students graduating with a bachelor’s degree in this program are eligible to sit for the national certification exam given by the National Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Upon passing the exam, the individual becomes a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and is qualified to work with individuals with disabilities in numerous settings and disability groups.
