BACKGROUND

Allen University is a coed private independent African Methodist Episcopal 4-year university, which confers the bachelor's degree. Founded in 1870 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), Allen University is the first institution of higher education in South Carolina founded by African Americans for the express purpose of educating African Americans.

BACKGROUND

Benedict College , originally Benedict Institute, was founded in 1870 under the auspices of the American Baptist Home Mission Society. Mrs. Bathsheba A. Benedict of Pawtucket , Rhode Island , provided financial support for the establishment of Benedict. Adding to a small bequest from her husband, Mrs. Benedict provided $13,000 towards the purchase of an eighty-acre plantation near Columbia , South Carolina , as the site for a new school for the recently emancipated people of African descent. Benedict Institute set out from humble beginnings in a dilapidated former slave master's mansion to prepare men and women to be "powers for good in society." Benedict is a four-year independent Baptist institution that confers bachelor degrees.

Benedict offers degrees in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Departments.

The College is committed to providing instruction, which leads to the baccalaureate degrees in the arts, sciences and professional areas. In addition, the college is committed to providing continuing education that will lead to certificates and other special designations that may be useful for a career in the external environments. It is the intent of the college to prepare students to enter career paths, which will result in leadership positions in business, education, church, government, community, and professional organizations, or to prepare students for further graduate and professional study.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The College operates and unusual program entitled “The Residential Construction Welfare-to-Work Program”.  This program is funded by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Operated through a collaboration of Benedict College , the Benedict-Allen Community Development Corporation, and community partners in the construction industry, the program is designed to provide men and women with skills in housing construction and with opportunities to work on housing projects in Census Tract 10 in the City of Columbia .  The major activities of this program are job development, skills enhancement, and career development of low-income workers.

BACKGROUND

The Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina to provide educational opportunities for Negro students in response to the historical denial of access to the existing educational system founded Morris College . Today, under the continued ownership of its founding body, the College opens its doors to a culturally and geographically diverse student body, typically from the Southeast and Northeast regions. Morris College is an accredited, four-year, coeducational, residential, liberal arts institution awarding baccalaureate degrees in the arts and sciences.  Morris College was established “for the Christian and intellectual training of Negro youth.”  The mission of the College is to prepare students for completion of the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science Education.

BACKGROUND

Voorhees College is a private, coeducational, liberal arts, and baccalaureate degree granting institution affiliated with the Episcopal Church. The College stands as testimony to the faith and determination of its founder, a young visionary named Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, a former student of Booker T. Washington at Tuskegee . Miss Wright, at 23, dreamed the seemingly impossible dream of starting a school for black youth in Denmark , South Carolina .  The University is affiliated with the: Episcopal Church and The College Fund/UNCF.

 

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Voorhees offers pre-medicine, pre-nursing and allied health careers.  The Division of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Computer Science proposes to offer a Dual Degree Program in collaboration with the College of Health Professions at the Medical University of South Carolina in the following areas. Medical Technology (3+2), Cytotechnology (3+2), Physical Therapy (3+2), Occupational Therapy (3+2), and Physician Assisting (3+2).  The Dual Degree Program offers an opportunity for students enrolled at Voorhees College to complete three years at Voorhees College and to complete two years at the Medical University of South Carolina and to receive two degrees: one from Voorhees College in Biology and the second from the Medical University of South Carolina in one of the programs listed above.
